Travel and Leisure

Chasing Waterfalls

Sri Lanka has a reputation for harbouring some of the most magnificent waterfalls found in South Asia and this is especially true for the island’s central hill country. If you’re lucky enough the find yourself in the green hills of Nuwara Eliya, here are four waterfalls you simply need to seek out and see for yourself.

Lovers Leap Falls

Arguably the most famous of the region’s waterfalls, Lovers Leap is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Nuwara Eliya. The waterfall owes its name to a story that details how two lovers jumped off the falls to their deaths because their families did not approve of their union. For those spending their vacation at the Araliya green hills, this magnificent natural attraction is less than 15 minutes away – so be sure to not miss out.

Glen Falls

Found just a short distance away from Lovers Leap and only a short walk away from the Araliya Green Hills, Glen Falls is another great waterfall that you should visit during your time in Nuwara Eliya. It is a seasonal waterfall, however, so you’ll want to visit it during the wet season.

Bomburu Ella Falls

If you’re staying at the Araliya Green Hills, Bomburu Ella Falls is just a short drive away. Now, in order to get the best possible look at this waterfall, you’ll need to embark on a 3-kilometre hike but the reward is well worth it.

Devon Falls

Devon Falls is one of the largest waterfalls you’ll find in the region – it’s an impressive 97 metres in height. There are plenty of viewpoints to discover here as well, so you can have a great time exploring around the falls. If you’re travelling from the Araliya Green Hills, you’re looking at a 2-hour drive to reach the waterfall with plenty of other attractions to see along the way.
