Unawatuna Fruit Market

Owing to its tropical location, the vast and varied landscapes of Sri Lanka is home to a diverse range of flora which bears rare and luscious fruits – many of these cannot be seen and savoured anywhere else on the planet!  Sri Lanka is dotted with dedicated fruit markets that bring in fruits from around the country, letting people of different regions enjoy and relish what the island has to offer. Along with the Galle fruit market, Unawatuna is also home to such fruit markets that are renowned for the elaborate choice of fruits that it offers.

Tropical fruits such as mangoes, pineapples, papaw, avocadoes, and different varieties of bananas are the fruits which are common in the market. But if you are feeling a bit adventurous and are looking for something rare and exotic, you could also find the Durian (the king of fruits),  Jack fruit, Starfruit, Mangosteen and Rambutans which are fruits that you can only find in the tropics. We also recommend that you try out the fruits endemic to the island such as veralu, uguressa, velvet tamarind, and unique varieties of citrus fruits which you can easily find at the stalls.

The vendors here are friendly and hospitable, you could get free samples of the fruit if you ask them politely – but make sure that you buy some too. This greatly helps them and it supports the local economy as well.
